Chargers Trick or Treating Ends With a Sweet 3-0 Sweep Treat

WEST HAVEN, Conn – As the sun began to set and the trick or treaters began to make their way from house to house, the University of New Haven Volleyball team was trick or treating for a non-conference win against the Knights of Queens College on Halloween night.

With skeletons, hot dogs and minions filling the seats of the gymnasium the Chargers and Knights tipped off as New Haven looked to stay perfect on their home court and win their second straight match. It was Queens that took the early lead in the match as New Haven played from behind for most of the opening set closing the gap but never fully taking the lead. Trailing by five as Queens was the first to 20, Ana Pego used a timeout to regroup the Chargers for a late push. Out of the break New Haven went on a 5-0 run that saw kills by Katharine Rank, Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai), and an ace by Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) to tie the match at 20-20 forcing a timeout by the Knights. Out of their timeout the Knights retook the lead but New Haven responded and dug in closing the set out with a Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) kill to win the first set 25-23 and go up in the match 1-0. In the second set, New Haven  cruised to the win as the Chargers spread the attack around as six Chargers had kills, being led by Kamke who had five kills in the 25-17 second set win to go up 2-0 in the match. In the third set it was once again Queens leading the way early as glimpses of the opening set reappeared. A 5-0 run tied the match and put New Haven back into a position to pull away late and getting to set and match point off an ace by Juergens. After a late scare forced a timeout by Pego, a service error by the Knights won the set and match for New Haven 25-21 and 3-0. Juergens led all attackers with 12 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) had 23 assists and Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) had 21 digs.

The Chargers now return to conference play for the final stretch of the regular season as they kick things off against another Knight, the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College. New Haven travels to Colchester Vermont, on Saturday November 2, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 PM. All updates, schedules, and post-match recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
