COLCHESTER, Vermont – With the turn of the calendar, the University of New Haven Volleyball team looked to keep their winning ways from October as they made the trip up north to take on the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College coming off the Chargers non-conference win on Halloween against the Knights of Queens College.
After traveling up the night before, the Chargers came off the bus fresh and opened up the match strong as at the net, Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Amber Williams (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) went back to back blocks to open up the match up 2-0 in the first. The Chargers continued to score in pairs before scoring the final four points of the set as Williams had the final kill of the set as New Haven won the opening set 25-21. The second set saw the Purple Knights even the match at 1-1 as New Haven would drop the second set 25-23. Not giving the Purple Knights any room to build momentum the Chargers answered in the third. Trailing early New Haven responded, scoring in pairs as they did in the first. Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) sealed the deal in the third with a kill to win the third 28-26 and went up in the match 2-1. In the fourth, New Haven opened up on a 4-0 run and setting the tone in the match. New Haven never trailed in the fourth and pulled away late as New Haven closed out the set and match on back to back errors by the Purple Knights to win the fourth, 25-15 and win the match 3-1. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) led the attack with 19 kills as Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) had 18 digs and Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) had 32 assists.
The Chargers now return to play at home when the Chargers welcome the Falcons of Bentley University on Community Night in West Haven on Saturday, November 9 with tip-off scheduled for 1:00PM. All updates, schedules, and post-match recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
