WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After a week of rest the University of New Volleyball returned to action and returned to their home court where they looked to remain perfect as they welcomed the Falcons of Bentley University for a battle of top teams in the conference on Community day for New Haven.
The Falcons and Chargers met earlier in the year and it was the Falcons coming out on top in Waltham, and it was now the Chargers looking for redemption on their home court. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead but New Haven quickly responded with a run of their own to take the lead through the middle of the set. Bentley however came back late as New Haven fell in the first set 25-18. New Haven quickly responded in the second set and never trailed taking a commanding lead and never let the Falcons back into the game as multiple 3-0 runs were the difference and New Haven countered with a 25-18 win of their own in the second to tie the match at 1-1. The third saw both teams trade runs but the Falcons responded in the third as a late run by Bentley saw the third straight match being decided by a score of 25-18 but this one being won by Bentley who retook the lead in the match 2-1. New Haven responded once again as they did in the second, never trailing as an early run led by Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), Naliah Grannel, and Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) to take the lead and pull away early. Bentley pressured late closing within one to make it close but New Haven closed out the set with Kamke's kill to tie the match at 2-2 and force a fifth set. As Bentley had won the odd numbered sets and New Haven had won the even numbered sets, it all came down to the odd numbered fifth. Bentley came out with an early lead forcing New Haven to battle back but it was the Falcons taking the fifth set, 15-8 as New Haven would drop the match 3-2. SoFia Kamke led with 16 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) had 40 assists and Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) had 23 digs.
The Chargers now return to the road for their final road match of the year as they travel to New York to take on the Setters of Pace University on Tuesday, November 12 with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
