BOCA RATON, Fla. – The New Haven baseball team kept its high scoring ways of yesterday alive on Tuesday as it posted the fifth-straight win with a 15-3 decision over the Post Eagles at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. With the win, New Haven evens its record at 6-6 on the young season.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the day was first baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) who finished a double shy of the cycle, going 4-for-6 on the day with a career-high seven RBI and three runs scored. Overall, he was one of seven players to hit safely on the day as the Chargers scattered 18 total hits against the Eagles pitching staff.
McIntire was one of six New Haven players to finish the day with multiple hits, with three others all racking up three hits. Wrapping up the day with a trio of base knocks was centerfielder Sean Callahan, third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and right fielder Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon). Both McIntire and Callahan went yard on the day, McIntire doing so twice with a pair of three run blasts, while Callahan lifted a solo blast over the fence in right.
Two additional Chargers finished with a pair of hits on the day with designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and short stop Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) concluding their day with multiple hits. Maucere joined McIntire with a trio of RBI, while four other players all drove in runs.
On the hill, sophomore righty Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) threw six strong innings to earn his first victory of the season. In what was his third appearance of the year, Ramnarace surrendered three earned runs on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out five batters.
Out of the pen, New Haven used four relievers with Christian DeRisi seeing the most time on the hill, giving two innings of work. Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) followed with one inning, while and Lucas Klopp (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and Jake Zenger (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) split the ninth.
Post would break the ice first, scoring a single run with a single swing of the bat as the leadoff batter in the inning would be the first of the day to launch a home run, his with a 1-2 count lifting over the wall in left. The Eagles would continue to threaten in the second, however New Haven stranded three runners on to end the frame.
New Haven didn't let that Post lead stand very long as four of the first five batters in the top of the third would reach safely, the last of which was a three-run home run from sophomore first baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown), launching his first of the season over the right field fence. Those three runs were the final of the frame, while a sacrifice one batter prior from Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) started out the rally for the Chargers.
After surrendering another single run in the bottom of the third, New Haven kept its scoring going with three more in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth to take a 10-2 lead. The fourth inning rally for the Blue and Gold began with another yard ball, this time as outfielder Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) led off the inning with his second career home run, this one to right field. Maucere kept it going a few batters later with another RBI, this time driving in Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) on a single to right before McIntire added to his RBI total with an RBI single that scored Aedan Forde (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist).
Again in the fifth inning, four of the first five New Haven batters reached safely with catcher Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) the first to record an RBI when his one-out single to left allowed Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) to speed home from second after initially walking to lead off the inning. Two batters later, shortstop Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) added an RBI when his single to left allowed Callahan to score, while Maucere added to his RBI total two batters after that on another single to right which allowed McGugan to be rewarded as he scored from second.
The Eagles would muster another single run in the bottom of the fifth inning before New Haven answered right back with a single run in the top of the sixth, the fourth-straight inning finding the plate. This time around it was Pincince grabbing the RBI as he sacrificed himself on a fly ball to center that allowed the designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) to score after he led off the frame with a double and advanced on a wild pitch.
New Haven will conclude its trip to the Sunshine State on Wednesday morning when they are set to play fellow Northeast-10 opponent Bentley. First pitch from Lynn University is slated for 10:00 a.m.
