BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore catcher Kenny Hirschfeld (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) drilled his second collegiate home run for what would be the lone run for the New Haven Baseball team as they closed out their trip to the Sunshine State with an 11-1 decision against Bentley on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, New Haven will return to the Northeast with a 6-7 overall record and will next host the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans for a four-game series this coming weekend.
The home run for Hirschfeld was one of five hits for the Chargers with a single player collecting multiple hits on the day, right fielder Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) who finished 2-for-4 at the plate. In addition to him and Hirschfeld, centerfielder Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and designated hitter Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) each hit safely on one occasion, with four of the five New Haven hits coming from the top three in the order. The Chargers also mustered three walks at the plate, stranding a total of six batter on base.
On the mound, starter Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Wilmington) suffered the loss in what turned out to be just 1.2 innings of work for the transfer lefty. Facing a total of 15 batters, Lewis surrendered six earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one batter.
Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was the first of four relievers out of the pen for the Blue and Gold, throwing 2.1 innings and striking out a staff-high three batters, while surrendering two hits but remaining scoreless.
Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) entered from the pen in the fifth inning and threw a team-high three innings. Overall, Vohra gave up one unearned run and walked two batters but did not surrender a hit. Jake Zenger (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and Robert Synodi (Hebron, C.T./RHAM) also threw one inning out of the pen.
The four-game series with the Spartans is scheduled for a pair of doubleheaders, one each on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 with first pitch on both days slated for 12:00 p.m. at Vieira Field.
