Lewis Tosses Gem as Chargers Take Down Host Lynn to Open Southern Trip

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A pitching gem from the Chargers transfer southpaw Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Wilmington) as the starter threw six full innings without allowing a run to lead the Chargers to a 5-2 win over the RV Lynn University Fighting Knights on Friday afternoon. The win in the opening game of the Chargers southern trip improves the Blue and Gold's overall record to 3-6 on the season.

In his first win as a Charger, Lewis surrendered just a single hit and walked two batters, facing 20 total batters in his six innings of work. He also struck out one. Out of the pen, the Chargers relied on a trio from its staff, with transfer Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) earning his first save in a Charger uniform, throwing two innings of relief without surrendering a run while giving up a pair of hits.

At the plate, it was the senior leadership of Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) that led the way as the designated hitter went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. He was one of three Chargers to finish with a pair of hits, joined by first baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy). McIntire also drove in the final run of the Chargers five total in the game, while Frazzetta's two hits came on three at bats, while he also scored a run.

Four other players all finished with a single hit on the day, while McIntire was the lone Chargers to secure an extra base knock as he drilled a two-out double in the top of the eighth inning. McIntire was also the first to drive in a run, doing so on his first hit of the game, an RBI single in the fifth inning that drove in Frazzetta who led off the inning with a walk.

That run was the first of three for New Haven in the fifth inning as Wells came through with his first two RBI of the day three batters later driving in leadoff batter Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade), who also walked, and McIntire.

Two innings later Wells came through again as he drove in the final two runs of the game for New Haven with another single, this time with the bases loaded and scoring both Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Sean Callahan. The Chargers would surrender those two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but would allow the Flying Knights to get no closer as they turned to Vohra to close out the victory.

New Haven will continue its five-game stretch in Boca Raton on Saturday when they are scheduled to play the Wilmington Wildcats with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. on the Lynn University campus.
