WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Hosting its first ever 7's tournament, the New Haven women's rugby team finished 0-4 on the day at the inaugural Charger Crown at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium.
Leading the Chargers on the day was graduate student Amanee Saucier (New Haven, Conn./Highville Change Academy) and senior Damaris Williams (/) who each finished with a pair of tries, while junior Sydney Dela Cruz (Campbell, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) finished the day with five conversions across the four games. Additionally, Alexis Byrne (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan) and Aggie Magan each added a try.
In the opening game of the day, the Chargers dropped a 22-14 decision to Sacred Heart. Against the Pioneers Saucier scored both of the Blue and Gold tires, while Dela Cruz completed both scoring plays with the conversions. The Yellow Jackets took a 27-0 victory in the second game.
In the final game in round robin play, the Chargers matched up against Long Island, with the Sharks taking a 31-14 victory. Magan and Williams split the tries, while Deka Cruz made both of her conversion attempts.
In the consolation game, New Haven rallied late but dropped a 17-12 decision. The Chargers scored first with Byrne completing the try less than three minutes into the action, with Dela Cruz adding the conversion. Trailing 17-7 in the second half, Williams broke through on the sideline to pick up her second try of the game, while the conversion went incomplete.
American International closed out pool play with a perfect 3-0 record but fell victim to Sacred Heart in the Championship game by a final scored of 22-19.
This afternoon's sevens tournament was the final of the spring season with the next thing on New Haven's schedule the 7's Collegiate Rugby Championship which will take place April 27-28 at Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md.
