WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven baseball team forced extras in game one and held a late lead in game two but came up on the short end of both games in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against the visiting Bentley Falcons. With the two Sunday losses, New Haven falls to 18-19 overall and 108-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Chargers will conclude their four-game weekend action on Monday with a rescheduled doubleheader against the Assumption Greyhounds. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the Chargers and Greyhounds were unable to play due to field conditions and will now see a first pitch in the doubleheader come at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22.
In the opening game, a pair of Chargers closed out the 11-inning affair with multiple hits, while as a team, New Haven finished with nine hits. Leading the way was third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and second baseman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) who each finished 2-for-5 at the dish. Budzik also added the only RBI of the game, while the game-tying run in the eighth for New Haven scored due to a throwing error.
On the mound in the opener, starter Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) went 7.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out a half dozen. Both Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) saw time out of the pen for the Chargers, with Minio suffering the loss as he allowed one earned run on two hits in three innings of work, while also striking out three.
At the dish in game two, New Haven finished with just four total hits, with two of those coming from the right fielder Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. All four RBI in the game came from different players with Frazzetta, Budzik and catcher Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) all joining Callahan in that column. Cerruto and designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) added the two remaining hits, while Wells and left fielder Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) combined for five walks in the three and four holes in the lineup.
Again in game two, the Chargers starting pitcher would end with a no decision. This time around it was Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) who started for New Haven, surrendering two earned runs on six hits and two walks with a pair of K's in five innings of work. Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in less than an inning of work. Christian De Risi (Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) closed out the final 1.1 innings without surrendering a hit to the Falcons.
