WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After nearly coming back in game one, freshman pitcher Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) threw a six-inning gem to lead the New Haven baseball team to a game-two victory to split the day against the visiting Assumption Greyhounds. With the split, New Haven stands at 19-20 on the season and 11-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Fusco's six innings were highlighted by allowing just a single earned run, two total, on seven hits while he struck out six batters, all leading to his fourth win of the season. He would turn the ball over to Henry Iuzzolino (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) to close out the game, pitching a scoreless seventh.
At the plate in the victory, New Haven was led by catcher Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) who finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. His two RBI were part of six total for the Chargers, with the remaining four coming from different players. The only other Charger to finish with multiple hits in the win was designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Four additional players all hit safely with one hit apiece, including outfielder Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) and Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and second baseman EJ Ettinger (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) who all finished with a hit and an RBI to their credit. Maucere also reached safely three additional times on walks.
In the opening game it was the bat of first baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) that led the way for New Haven as he was one of two players to finish with a pair of hits, going 2-for-5 with an RBI, which came on a solo home run. Wells would also finish the game with two hits, combining to finish the day with four total base knocks. He would also drive in a run in the opening game, as did Maucere and third baseman Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
On the mound in the opener, starter Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) suffered the loss, his second of the season, surrendering three earned runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Four Chargers saw time out of the pen with Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) and Jake Zenger (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) both throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. Both would surrender a single hit to the Greyhounds, while Allen struck out a pair and Zenger sat one batter down with a K.
