Split Squad Chargers Make Final Preparations ahead of Conference Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A week out of the Conference Championships, the University of New Haven Men's and Women's Track and Field Team's split their squad and competed at a pair of meets with members traveling to compete at the Penn Relays while others competed at the James Barber Invitational at Southern Connecticut State University.

 

In the sandpit, the Chargers swept the standings in the Triple Jump, as Jackson Marescot (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) took home the win with a jump of 14.40m, ahead of teammate Matthew Steele (North Kingstown, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) who finished second with a jump of 13.59m and fellow Charger, Luis Calderon () finished third with a jump of 12.69m to complete the sweep. The success continued in the sand pit as in the men's long jump Jackson Marescot (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) took home his second win of the meet with a jump of 7.09m.

 

Mohammed Abunar (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) finished second overall in the 1500m crossing with a final time of 4:05.53.

 

Cole Parker (Severn, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) took home the win for the Chargers in High Jump, when Parker cleared 1.97m on his second attempt at that height. Jackson Marescot (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) finished third in the event clearing 1.77m

 

Declan McGrellis (Frederica, Md./Frederica) finished second overall in Pole Vault clearing 3.75m on his second attempt at the height.

 

J'Quan Athis (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse) finished third overall in shot put, on his fourth throw when he threw a mark of 14.24m.

 

On the women's side Angelina Schilling (Sewell, N.J./Deptford Township) finished third overall in the 800m crossing with a final time of 2:27.58.

 

Isabella Bostic (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) finished second overall in the 400m Hurdles crossing with a final time of 1:10.36.

 

Angela Mercaldi (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) finished third overall in the women's triple jump, jumping 10.31m on her second to last attempt to climb into the top three.

 

Isabelle Robinson (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) finished second overall in the women's hammer throw with a throw of 42.65m to place her with the second best mark of the meet.

 

At the Penn Relays the Chargers competed with the best of the best in the country across all three divisions and posted strong marks in their final meet when they compete against the rest of the conference in a week.

With final preparations made, the teams now look to carry the momentum from indoor and the season to the outdoor championships as they will have the short drive to Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, May 3 and Saturday May 4 at the Northeast 10 Championships.
