WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Trailing in both ends of its doubleheader, the New Haven baseball team rebounded to secure a pair of wins to open up its three-game Northeast-10 Southwest Division series with the Saint Rose Golden Knights. With the two wins, New Haven improves to 14-13 on the season and 6-4 in the NE10. The Chargers and Golden Knights will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 12:00 p.m.
For the day, sophomore first baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) led the way at the plate with a combined four hits and three RBI all coming on eight at bats. Two additional players combined for three hits on the day, Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham), with the latter of those two also driving in three runs with a pair of RBI in the first game and one more in game two.
On the hill, it was the relief work of Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) in the opening game and six innings of work from starter Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) that earned the two victories, while Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Wilmington) each earned a save on the day.
Ramnarace threw one inning of relief in the first game, facing five total batters while surrendering one hit and striking out a pair. Overall, he was one of three relievers out of the pen for starter Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) who pitched 6.2 innings and allowed a trio of earned runs on seven hits with eight K's.
In the nightcap, Gatti threw six full innings and gave up six runs, five of which were earned. Those six runs came on seven hits and a walk while he struck out three. The only reliever in game two, Lewis added to the strikeout total with three more for a total of 10 in the game as he did not allow a run on two hits and no walks.
