Bring out the Broom!! Baseball Comes Back to Sweep the Weekend vs Saint Rose

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Trailing by as much as three midway through the game, the Chargers rallied for eight runs in the final three innings to erase the deficit and secure a three-game weekend sweep of the Saint Rose Golden Knights with a 10-6 decision in the series finale. With the win, New Haven improves to 15-13 on the year and 7-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

The hot bat of the afternoon came from the outfielder as junior right fielder Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) closed out the afternoon going 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-run home run just to the left of the scoreboard in right field. Also hitting well for the Blue and Gold was sophomore left fielder Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with his two hits going for extra bases, a double and a triple.

The middle of the Chargers lineup was very productive With Pincince and Maucere hitting fourth and fifth in the lineup while the three hole hitter in designated hitter Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) also finished with a pair of hits, his coming on five at bats while he also drove in a pair of runs. Rounding out the leaders at the plate was the leadoff bat of Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Overall, the Chargers scattered 10 hits with he final of the afternoon off the bat of the hot corner rookie Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who went 1-for-4 on the day. The Chargers also managed four walks, with two of those coming from freshman shortstop Mike Christian (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) who took advantage and came around to score on one of those occasions.

On the mound it was another freshman who started and went six innings with Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) closing out his fifth start with no decision. Overall, he surrendered five runs, four of which were earned, on five hits and three walks with a trio of strikeouts.

Earning the win on the mound was transfer righty Jake Zenger (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) who pitched a full seventh inning, surrendering one run on two hits and a walk. The win for Zenger leaves him a perfect 2-0 when coming out of the pen at Frank Vieira Field. Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) and Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) each pitched an inning of relief and each finished with one strikeout, none bigger than Vohra sitting down the Golden Knights cleanup hitter with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth.

New Haven will return to action with a pair of midweek games on the docket. First up will be a trip to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University for the second of the three games series against the Owls, with New Haven taking the first game. First pitch in the rescheduled game two against the Owls is set for 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
