Big Bat; McIntire Grand Slam Leads Chargers in Road Loss at SCSU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With the bases loaded and the Chargers trailing 5-3, sophomore first baseman Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) drilled his team-leading fifth home run of the season racking up four RBI and flipping the score in favor of the Blue and Gold. The New Haven baseball team was unable to hold onto that lead, dropping an 8-7 decision to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University, evening the three-game series at 1-1.

With the loss, New Haven falls to 15-14 on the year and 7-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Chargers will get right back on the diamond on Wednesday when they welcome the Queens College Knights to Frank Vieira Field with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.

Overall, McIntire's home run was his only hit of the day as he finished 1-for-3 at the plate with two walks, two runs scored and the four RBI. His hit was part of nine total for the Chargers with six different players getting in on the action.

Three of the six finished with multiple hits as designated hitter Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington), shortstop Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) and second baseman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) all finished with a team-high two hits. Budzik came off the bench to finish the afternoon a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI. Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) also drove in a run which came on a ground ball out.

On the hill, New Haven used a pair of pitchers with starter Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) going five innings and reliever Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) pitching three-plus innings. Ramnarace surrendered five runs, all unearned, on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters. Minio, who suffered the loss, surrendered three runs, two of them earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out three.
