WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After rolling in their home opener against Bridgeport, the road trip resumed for the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team as they traveled to Pennsylvania to take on the Rams of Jefferson University in a non-conference match-up.
Senior captain, Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and reigning Conference Player of the Year returned to the court and made her impact known from the start of the match. Sophomore Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) continued her strong start to the season as she picked up the first kill for New Haven on an assist by Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers). That kill was the beginning of a 5-0 New Haven run where New Haven went from trailing by one to leading by three, and a run that kickstarted the opening set. They never looked back after taking that early lead and rallied after Jefferson closed the scoring gap, but Juergens, Brown, and Naliah Grannell (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had other thoughts as they would pick up timely kills to shift the momentum back in favor of New Haven before Brown ended the opening set with a kill, to win 25-23 and go up 1-0 in the match. The second set played similarly to the first as New Haven had an early 5-0 run again to take a one-point lead that Jefferson took back over through the middle of the set. Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) picked up a kill as Borton found her fellow sophomore to bring New Haven within one and spark a Mast-led 6-0 run where Mast had three kills to give New Haven a 23-20 lead late before an attack error saw New Haven grab the win 25-20 and go up 2-0 in the match. With back-to-back sweeps on their mind, New Haven jumped out early in the third and another 6-0 run gave the blue and gold the lead as Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) once again got the rally started with a kill and a pair of kills by Brown kept thing rolling to a lead. Taking the lead New Haven never looked back as Brown finished the set with a kill, her 12 kill of the match in her return to lead all scorers as New Haven won the third 25-20 and the match 3-0 for their second straight sweep. Juergens was right behind Brown with 11 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) posted a double-double with 20 assists and 14 digs and Naliah Grannell (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had three blocks on the night.
