WATERBURY, Conn. – Coming off their perfect week, and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) being named the Northeast-10 Player of the Week, the University of New Haven Volleyball team started their week with a short trip up to Waterbury to take on the Eagles of Post University in their first of four non-conference games this week.
The Chargers opened up the first set with an early lead over the Eagles riding kills by Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers), Lauren MacKellar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Northville), and Juergens and New Haven was the first to 20 points in the opening set as Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) as well joined in on adding kills to the scoring. A late run however by the the Eagles forced a New Haven timeout to slow the Eagles late surge. Out of the break, New Haven scored a pair but Post scored the pair they needed to take the first set 25-23.
In the second set, New Haven jumped out early again as Amber Williams (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) and Juergens each had kills in the run. New Haven led the majority of the second set, but again a late run by Post was the difference as they responded late with a run taking the second set 25-20 and going up 2-0 in the match.
In the crucial third set, New Haven again jumped out early building a lead, and capitalized on a 7-0 run cashing in on errors by Post, and a pair of aces by Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai). In the set New Haven never let Post take the lead and were able to hold on late as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) picked up the set-winning kill, inching her team closer in the match with their 25-22 win in the third.
Looking to extend the match In the fourth, Juergens and Williams matched the opening kills by Post to even the fourth set and began a 5-0 run to take the lead for New Haven. The Chargers held the early lead and through the middle of the set, but another late run by Post pulled the Eagles away as they took the fourth set, 25-18 and New Haven dropped the match 3-1.
Juergens led the Chargers with 13 kills while Borton had 17 assists and Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) led the defense with 26 digs.
New Haven now returns home to Charger Gymnasium as they open up a set of three matches in two days against non-conference opponents.
