WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off their loss to the Eagles of Post University the University of New Haven Volleyball team returned to their home court as they opened up their tri-match weekend as they took on the Chargers of Dominican University before a second match of the night against the Bear of Bloomfield College.
Game 1 vs Dominican
In a battle of the Chargers, New Haven hosted Dominican in the opening match of the night and it was Dominican that got out to the quick start scoring the first four points of the set. New Haven however quickly settled in as they responded with a 4-0 run of their own as Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai), Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) all had kills to tie the match at 4-4. The Chargers stayed neck and neck as neither team completely pulled away in the opening set. Down the stretch, however, it was the New Haven Chargers that had the extra energy in the tank, closing on a 6-0 run led by the service by Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) who added an ace to the pair of kills by Kamke to take the first set 25-18. After the opening set win, New Haven was off to the races finding a better rhythm. In the second set, again it was neck and neck early as both Chargers traded leads, but Mast and Juergens again used their experience and composure, picking up the final three kills amongst the pair to win the second set, 25-22, and go up 2-0 in the match. Looking to sweep again at home and get the extra rest ahead of their match with the Bears, Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) opened up quickly going on a 5-0 run and never looked back and never trailed in the third set going on and winning a comfortable third set, 25-17 to sweep the Dominican Chargers in straight sets, 3-0. Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) and Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) led all attackers with 11 kills each, as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 30 assists and 13 digs defensively.
Game 2 vs Bloomfield
Coming off their sweep of the Chargers of Dominican and getting extra rest after making quick work, the Chargers kept the momentum rolling as they went to work against the Bears of Bloomfield. After splitting the first two points the Chargers went on an 8-0 run led by the Serve of Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) to take a commanding lead. New Haven never looked back as they went on to win 25-9. The second set was more of the same as New Haven went on and rolled the second set as well, winning 25-9 as well. In the third set, New Haven never gave Bloomfield a chance as they went to the bench and got everyone involved as they won the third set 25-6. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) led all attackers with 7 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) posted a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs.
The Chargers will conclude their tri-meet when they welcome the Tigers of Holy Family on Saturday, September 28 with first tip scheduled for 2:00 PM from Charger Gymnasium on the Charger Sports Network.
