WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off their perfect Friday night where the University of New Haven Volleyball team swept the Chargers of Dominican and Bears of Bloomfield, New Haven looked to keep the brooms out as they welcomed the Tigers of Holy Family to the court for their final match of the tri-match weekend.
Picking up where they left off from Friday night as Amber Williams (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) set the tone dropping home the first kill of the match and sparking a 5-0 rally to open the match. It was only up from there as Holy Family never led in the match and New Haven pulled away doing the little things right on both sides of the floor blocking at the net, capitalizing on mistakes and, Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) feeding the hot attacking hands of the outside hitters who found the gaps in the defense. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) closed out the opening set with a kill as New Haven won 25-12. The second set only got better for the Chargers who got out to a 15-point lead as they never let Holy Family find any rhythm or a hot hand and held them to single-digit points as New Haven secured the 25 points from an attack error by Holy Family and won the second set 25-7 and were up 2-0 in the match. In the third with the chance to go perfect on the weekend and 9-0 in sets, New Haven jumped out to a 12-1 lead before Holy Family scored their second point commanding the tempo and attack. With the lead in the set and match, head coach Ana Pego opened up the bench and had a chance to once again get more player minutes and experience and work on new combinations of pairings. The roll continued as Kaylee Weeks (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) got the finishing touch with an ace to win the third 25-16 and sweep the match 3-0. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) led all attackers with 12 kills, as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) posted 22 assists and Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) led with 11 digs.
The Chargers conclude their tri-match weekend by sweeping all three CACC opponents going 3-0 (9-0 in sets) and go 3-1 on the week. The Chargers now return to the road for yet another non-conference match up against the Lions of Molloy. The Chargers travel to Rockville Centre New York on Tuesday, October 1, and will tip off from the Quealy Gymnasium at 7:00 PM.
