Hogan and Bassett Lead the Way in Road Loss at SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Behind a pair of Chargers in double figures, the New Haven women's basketball team dropped a 64-58 road decision to the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Tuesday night at Stan Spirou Field House. With the decision, New Haven falls to 13-6 on the season and 8-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Leading all New Haven scorers on the evening was junior Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who finished with 19 points, one of two players to finish in double figures as she was joined by senior Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who closed out the game with 14 points. Among the two leading scorers, Bassett led the Chargers shooting 6-of-9 from the field, including a pair of three pointers. Hogan capped off her night converting 7-of-18 field goal attempts with five of those coming from outside the arc as she continues to move up the all-time top-10 in program history for made three point field goals.

As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 23-of-58 from the field, including seven three pointers split between Hogan and Bassett. Additionally, the Chargers finished 5-of-9 at the free throw line. Additionally, the Chargers and Penmen finished in a 31-31 deadlock in the rebounding battle with Hogan also leading the way in the battle of the boards with eight rebounds.

Among the 23 total field goals, 14 came courtesy of an assist, with senior Sabira Ahayeva (Minsk, Belarus/Minsk #27) who finished with six. Additionally, the Chargers finished with 13 steals, forcing 20 SNHU turnovers, with Eveani Okwuosa (North Haven, Conn./Hamden Hall) coming off the bench to lead the way with five, adding that to four points and three assists.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

·         New Haven was the first two put a notch on the scoreboard with Hogan the first player to sink a bucket on a jumper outside the paint. SNHU answered right back just 16 seconds later with their first bucket for the early 2-2 draw.

·         That first SNHU basket began an 8-0 run, while holding New Haven scoreless for more than four minutes before Hogan struck again, this time with her first from outside the arc.

·         The Penmen would answer right back again, equalizing that three pointer while New Haven managed to cut the first quarter deficit down to two with 28 seconds remaining before the first break with freshman Schuyler Coles (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) scoring four-straight unanswered to pull the deficit to 13-11.

·         SNHU closed out the half with the final word, a three pointer that put the margin at five at the intermission.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

·         SNHU struck first in the second quarter with Hogan again the first to convert for the Chargers, however it took 2:30 before the junior was able to connect on a hook shot thanks to a pass from Okwuosa.

·         The Penmen responded with a pair of free throws to build their lead back to seven before the Chargers answered by scoring eight straight to erase the deficit and take their first lead of the evening thanks to a three from Bassett.

·         Defensively, New Haven held the Penmen scoreless for a four-minute stretch to rattle off the 8-0 run.

·         After the Penmen broke up their drought on a fastbreak bucket, Bassett hit again from outside the arc and followed that with a jumper 51 seconds later to extend the Chargers lead to four.

·         After a Nayeli Dowding (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) floater pushed the Chargers lead to six, the two teams swapped baskets to end the half with Merit Innocent (Delta State, Nigeria/Busche Academy) having the final work on a layup as time expired with the Blue and Gold taking a 30-24 lead into the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·         Coming out of the extended break the Penmen would convert first after a stretch of 90 seconds scoreless between the two teams. New Haven answered that opening SNHU basket with a three pointer from Hogan that pushed the lead back to six.

·         SNHU answered that deficit by rattling off six straight to knot the score at 33 with Hogan ending what was a 78 second drought with another three pointer to keep the lead in favor of the visitors.

·         New Haven would maintain the lead until the final 90 seconds of the quarter when a pair of free throws for the Penmen flipped the lead back in their favor for what would be the final lead change of the night. The Penmen would add one more basket in the final seconds to extend the lead to three at the final quarter break.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·         After the Penmen went scoreless on the opening possession of the fourth quarter, Bassett converted the first points of the quarter with a floater just 33 seconds into the action, cutting the deficit down to a single point, the closest New Haven would get in the final 10 minutes of action.

·         A three from Hogan and a jumper from Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) would once again cut the deficit to a single point, the second of those coming with 7:34 to play, however the Penmen answered by scoring six straight to extend their lead to seven at the midway point of the quarter.

·         A fast break layup from Cote with 2:39 remaining would pull the Chargers within a single possession but the Penmen's success at the free throw line would ice the victory.
