BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – The NEC announced its Weekly Award winners on Tuesday afternoon.
Jada Kamtha (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust High School for Girls) was named the NEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while
Gabrielle Teel (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) earned the title NEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Kamtha, a junior, sprinter clocked a league-best 8.68 in the 60m hurdles to win the event. Kamtha's 8.58 mark is tied for 71st on the NCAA performance list. The Jamaica native added another first-place finish at the Fastrack Season Opener with 8.71 60m hurdle time. Kamtha earned the distinction of being the first Charger to take home a NEC Track Athlete of the Week award.
Teel, a senior from Willow Grove, Pa., highlighted New Haven's explosive DI debut in the field events last week. The senior won the triple jump at two separate meets, including the Yale Season Opener and the Fastrack Season Opener. Teel leaped 11.93 meters at the Yale-hosted event to earn the top spot on the podium and on the NEC performance list. Her 11.93m mark is tied for 37th in the nation. She added an 11.87m triple jump distance at the Fastrack Season Opener to win the event, while finishing fifth in the long jump with a 5.27m mark, which is third in the conference. Teel is the first New Haven athlete to be tabbed NEC Field Athlete of the Week.
