Game one
Despite the loss, New Haven showcased moments of brilliance.
Emma Youngblood (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) delivered a key triple in the sixth inning, driving in
Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) for an unearned run to break the scoreless tie. Later,
Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) singled in the eighth inning to bring
Marzia Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) home, briefly giving New Haven a 2-1 lead. Ceccarelli also led the team offensively with two hits in four at-bats and an RBI.
Pitcher
Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) put forth a strong performance, allowing only one earned run across 7.1 innings while striking out four batters. However, Thomas More capitalized on late opportunities, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.
Game two
Despite the defeat, New Haven showed moments of promise. The Chargers rallied in the second inning, scoring two runs to tie the game at 3-3. Wilton drove in Sullivan with a groundout, and
Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) delivered a clutch RBI single to center field, bringing home Haniff.
Chenet had a solid day at the plate, going 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk before being replaced. Haniff also contributed offensively, collecting two hits in three at-bats.
On the mound, Sullivan took the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the season. She pitched three innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits. Johnson and Rhodes came on in relief, with Rhodes providing a bright spot by throwing 3.1 scoreless innings to finish the game.
New Haven's defense struggled, committing two errors which led to unearned runs. However, the team showed resilience, holding Aquinas scoreless for the final three innings.
With a day off tomorrow Chargers look to bounce back Thursday against Ferris State and D'Youville.
