Strong Sixth Inning Sends Chargers past Hawks

MANCHESTER, NH – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled to Manchester, NH on Monday to battle the St. Anselm Hawks on the road. The Chargers swept the doubleheader, taking home two much-needed conference wins on the back of a strong day for the bats.

Joe Frazetta opened the scoring in game one with an RBI single to center field, scoring Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) in the third inning.

The Hawks responded with two solo shots in the bottom of the third to take the lead 2-1. That score would hold until the fifth inning when the Hawks picked up another by way of a fielder's choice.

Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) and Franquiz each drove in a run in the top of the sixth, evening the score up at three apiece. Taylor's single to center brought home Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) and Franquiz plated Taylor with an RBI double.

The Chargers blew the game in the seventh inning, scoring six runs. First, it was a two-run double from Taylor to the left-center gap that brought home two more, bringing his RBI total to three on the day, setting a new season-high. Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) followed that with a three-run home run to left field, making it an 8-3 game. Franquiz put the exclamation point on the game with a solo trip around the bases, going back-to-back with Cerruto.

Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) earned his second win of the year after tossing six strong innings of three-run ball. The lefty allowed five hits and walked three while striking out six in his outing.

He would give way to Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), who would pitch a scoreless seventh inning. Cole Gibson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) went the rest of the way, shutting the door in the eighth and ninth innings, securing the 9-3 win.
