UNH Sweeps Doubleheader over Hawks with Win in Game Two

MANCHESTER, NH – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled to Manchester, NH on Monday to battle the St. Anselm Hawks on the road. The Chargers swept the doubleheader, taking home two much-needed conference wins on the back of a strong day for the bats.

Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) provided a spark for the Chargers, giving them a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, after homering to right center. Three RBIs is a season-high for the senior outfielder from West Babylon, NY.

The Hawks responded with five runs in the bottom of the third, all on singles.

The score stayed 5-3 until the top of the sixth, when the Blue and Gold would strike for another big inning, taking advantage of misplays in the field. Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) began the rally by hitting into a fielder's choice after the Hawks only  recorded one out at second base. Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) hit a ground ball to third, but the throw to first was off target, allowing Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), running for Maucere, to score. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery), scoring Ungania gave the Chargers a 6-5 lead. To cap off the scoring, Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) singled to left field, bringing home McGugan, resulting in the 7-5 final.

Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) started the game for the Chargers, going the first three innings of the seven-inning contest. He was tagged for all five runs (all earned), six hits, four walks, and struck out three. Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) picked up the win in relief, going the final four innings and keeping the Hawks off the scoreboard. Over his four innings, he walked three and struck out eight en route to his second win of the season.
