MANCHESTER, NH – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled to the Granite State on Tuesday to play game two of a doubleheader originally scheduled for Tuesday, Apr. 15, but a rainstorm postponed game two. A rain-shortened game one ended in six innings, an 11-4 loss for the Chargers. Game two wound up a closer affair, but the Penmen completed the sweep two weeks apart.
GAME ONE:
The Penmen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A nine-run fourth inning catapulted SNHU to an 11-0 lead after four innings.
A four-run top of the sixth inning for New Haven began with a Rob Taylor RBI double to left field, getting the Chargers on the board. Taylor would come around to score on a two-run home run from
Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy), making it an 11-3 ballgame. Joe Frazetta would double home
Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) later in the inning, resulting in the 11-4 final.
Timmy Lewis took the loss for the Chargers. He started the game and lasted 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (five earned), two walks, and struck out three.
GAME TWO:
The Penmen started game two the same way as they did game one, with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0.
UNH got one back in the top of the second, cutting the lead in half on a Cerruto solo shot to center field.
SNHU got a pair by way of the long ball in the bottom of the second frame, extending its lead to 4-1.
An RBI groundout from Taylor in the top of the third once again cut the lead in half.
Taylor drove in two to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning, bringing his RBI total to three on the day. Wells and
Mike Christian (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) crossed home plate.
The back-and-forth continued with the Penmen getting three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Down 7-4 in the top of the seventh, the Chargers rallied for two runs but the comeback attempt would fall short with the Penmen taking it, 7-6.
Carson Morgan (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) was hit with the loss for New Haven. He was tagged for three runs (two earned) and three hits in an inning of relief work.
