Homeruns Hurt Chargers in 10-5 Loss

DOBBS FERRY, NY – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled south to Dobbs Ferry, NY on Tuesday for an afternoon non-conference showdown with the Mercy University Mavericks.

New Haven opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning. Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) scored the game's first run on a Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) sacrifice fly to right field. Next, the Chargers pulled off a double steal, with Aeden Ford stealing second and Kenny Franquiz swiping home on the throw down. Casey McGugan singled home Ford shortly after, making it 3-0 Chargers after an inning and a half.

Franquiz made it 4-0 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, plating Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown).

The Mavericks would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third via two runs scoring on the long ball. Mercy got another homer in the fourth, this time a three-run shot, taking a 5-4 lead.

A sacrifice fly in the fifth inning gave Mercy another run to work with, making it 6-4.

A solo home run in the seventh made it a 7-4 Mavericks lead. Another sacrifice fly made it an 8-4 advantage for the Mavericks later in the inning.

The home-run bug hurt the Chargers again in the eighth as a two-run shot made it 10-4 in the bottom of the inning.

Joe Frazetta's ground-rule double that knocked in Joe Russo made it a 10-5 final.

Cole Gibson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) was hit with the loss for the Chargers, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three hits and a pair of earned runs.

The Chargers will return to conference action on Saturday, Apr. 26, as they travel to Worcester, MA for a conference doubleheader with the Assumption Greyhounds. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
