WALTHAM, MA – The University of New Haven Chargers traveled to the suburbs of Boston where they would sweep a doubleheader over the Assumption Greyhounds. After winning game one 8-7 in 11 innings, the Blue and Gold were all over the Greyhounds in game two, winning 9-5.
GAME ONE:
New Haven responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third, cutting a 4-0 Greyhound lead in half. With the bases loaded,
Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) was hit by a pitch, forcing everyone up a spot, getting UNH on the board. Shortly after, everyone moved up a base again on a wild pitch that made it 4-2 Greyhounds.
Assumption picked up three more in the bottom of the fifth, making it 7-2 Greyhounds.
Heading into the ninth inning, with their backs against the wall, the Chargers rallied for five runs to tie the game. A Kenny Franquiz single began the scoring, making it 7-3, plating
Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch).
Mike Christian (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) followed with an RBI single of his own, bringing home
Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport). A
Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) RBI double followed, knocking in
Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and making it a two-run game. Rob Taylor stepped up with a bases-clearing, two-run double, tying the game and capping off the Chargers huge inning.
In the top of the 11th, Maucere struck again, this time homering to give UNH the 8-7 win.
The Chargers bullpen was outstanding, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings and only allowing two hits.
Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), who pitched two scoreless innings, picked up the win, and
Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) hammered down his third save of the year.
GAME TWO:
With the momentum on its side following an emotional, come-from-behind win, New Haven jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game two.
McIntire singled home Joe Frazetta to open the scoring in the top of the first. Christian's two-run single made it 3-0 and Taylor's matching two-run single later in the inning made it a 5-0 game before the Greyhounds had the chance to hit.
The Chargers made it a 6-0 game when Franquiz doubled home Christian in the third inning.
Assumption got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, making it 6-2.
A solo shot from
Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) made it 7-2 in the fourth before the Greyhounds made it 7-3 in the bottom half of the inning.
Maucere picked up another pair of RBIs in the top of the fifth, making it 9-3 on a double to left center.
Sal Grinstead's solo home run in the sixth made it a 9-4 game with UNH still on top. Another run in the bottom of the seventh made it a 9-5 final.
Michael Gatti (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) started on the hill for the Chargers, earning the win. He finished five innings, allowing three runs (two earned), five hits, two walks, and fanned five.
