FORT MYERS, Fla. — New Haven Baseball fell to the University of Missouri 16-2 on Sunday at Terry Park. The Chargers (0-3) recorded four hits, while Missouri (5-2) took advantage of 11 hits to secure the victory.
New Haven initially led when
Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington) walked and scored on
Casey Cerruto's (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) single down the left field line in the first inning. Missouri countered with an eight-run bottom half, highlighted by Tyler Macon's single and stolen base, and Sam Parker's two-run double, putting Missouri ahead 8-1 after one inning.
In the fifth inning, the Chargers added a run.
Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) walked and advanced to third on
Chase McNally's (Methacton, Pa./Methacton) single. Manson's single to second base allowed Ungania to score, making it 14-2 after Missouri extended its lead with three runs in the bottom.
Missouri added two more runs in the sixth inning, expanding the lead to 16-2. Despite New Haven's efforts, including a walk by McNally in the seventh, the game concluded with Missouri 16, Blue & Gold 2.
New Haven's pitching staff faced challenges, with
Carson Morgan (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) allowing four earned runs on three hits over 2 innings, striking out four.
Max Hilsenroth (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs—two earned—on four walks and a home run. Jace Vanvalkenburg provided a solid relief performance, pitching a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and no hits. Kaleb Martinek struggled, allowing three runs on four hits in 1/3 inning. Starter
Cole Gibson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) did not record an out, allowing five runs on three hits and two walks.
Manson contributed with one hit, one RBI, and a walk. Cerruto had an RBI with a hit, driving in a run with two outs. Vanvalkenburg's relief performance included one hitless inning with two strikeouts.
New Haven holds a record of 0-3. Missouri is 5-2.
