FORT WORTH, Texas — New Haven baseball (0-4) was defeated by No. 18 Texas Christian University (4-5) with a 14-3 final score on Friday at Lupton Stadium. The Chargers recorded a season-high nine hits, scoring in the second, fourth, and seventh innings. TCU established an early lead with a five-run third inning, totaling nine hits for the game.
TCU opened the scoring in the first inning when Nolan Traeger singled to center, bringing in Sawyer Strosnider for a 1-0 lead.
New Haven leveled the score in the second inning.
Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) singled for a season-high two hits in the game and advanced to third on a double by
Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown), who also tallied two hits. Russo scored on a double play by Joe Frazzetta, marking Frazzetta's first RBI of the season, tying the game before TCU pulled ahead 5-1. TCU's Lucas Franco doubled, followed by walks and a bases-clearing double by Traeger, ending the inning with a 5-1 advantage.
TCU extended their lead in the third with a sacrifice fly from Rob Liddington and a fielding error by New Haven, which allowed two runs. Chase Brunson's two-run homer pushed TCU's lead to 10-1.
The Chargers added a run in the fourth as
Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) walked and scored on
Aedan Forde's (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) single, Forde's first RBI of the season. TCU responded with a three-run double by Cole Cramer, moving the score to 13-2.
In the fifth, TCU added a run with another sacrifice fly from Liddington, making it 14-2. New Haven held TCU scoreless in the sixth.
In the seventh,
Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) singled for a season-high two hits and scored on Russo's single, finalizing the score at 14-3. This was McGugan's first run of the season.
Myles McDermott (Braintree, Mass./Arch Bishop Williams) started for the Chargers, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and nine runs (eight earned) with four walks and two strikeouts.
Caleb Martinek (Enfield, Conn./The MacDuffie School) relieved, pitching 2/3 of an inning, surrendering four earned runs on two hits, including a home run, and two walks.
Mason Glickman (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) closed with 2 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit, with three walks and a strikeout, stranding three inherited runners.
Russo led New Haven with two hits and one RBI in four plate appearances. McGugan also contributed with two hits and one run scored. Forde added a hit and an RBI, drawing a walk. McIntire managed two hits, including a double, and reached base with a walk.
Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) recorded his first hit of the season.
