New Haven Has Strong Third Inning in Loss at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas — New Haven (0-5) fell to No. 18 Texas Christian University (5-5) with a 12-4 final score on Saturday at Lupton Stadium. Despite tallying 10 hits, New Haven could not overcome TCU's consistent scoring across eight innings.

TCU took an early lead in the first inning when Sawyer Strosnider walked and scored on Nolan Traeger's sacrifice fly, ending the inning 1-0. The second inning saw TCU extend its lead to 3-0 with Brady Dallimore and Rob Liddington scoring off Cole Cramer's single up the middle.

New Haven rallied in the fourth inning with a three-run surge. Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) and Matt McIntire (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) both walked and scored on Bobby Herzman's (Cheshire, Conn./HC Wilcox) double. Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), who was hit by a pitch, crossed home plate after Joe Frazzetta's single through the left side, narrowing the gap to 5-3.

TCU added another run in the fifth inning with Lucas Franco scoring on Cramer's sacrifice fly. The sixth inning saw Franco drive in two more runs with a double, pushing the lead to 8-3. In the seventh, Jack Arthur's double brought in two more, extending TCU's lead to 10-3.

The Blue & Gold added a run in the eighth inning when Frazzetta doubled, scoring Russo from first. TCU responded with two additional runs in the bottom half, sealing the score at 12-4. The game ended with a scoreless ninth inning.

New Haven's pitching staff faced challenges, with each pitcher allowing runs. Jesse Kostulias, over 3 innings, gave up 4 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) also pitched 3 innings, conceding 4 runs on 3 hits, 5 walks, and striking out 2. Blake Beattie (Glastonbury, Conn./Xavier) allowed 2 runs on 1 hit and a walk in 1 inning. James Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) closed out with 1 inning, yielding 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk.

Frazzetta recorded two hits and two RBIs, including a double, in his four plate appearances. Herzman also contributed with two hits, two RBIs, and a double. Callahan reached base three times with two hits and a walk, scoring once. Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) added two hits in his four at-bats.

Up Next, the Chargers will travel to face Texas Christian University again on Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in Fort Worth, Texas.
