KINGSTON, R.I. — New Haven baseball fell to the University of Rhode Island 11-0 on Tuesday at Beck Field. The Blue & Gold managed three hits and committed four errors in the road loss.
Rhode Island took control early, with Ryan Thompson scoring in the second inning following a failed pickoff attempt. A sacrifice fly extended the Rams' lead to 1-0 through two innings. Rhode Island's aggressive base-running resulted in a season-high three stolen bases.
The Rams added to their lead in the third inning with two more runs. Aidan Botti's sacrifice fly brought in Ryan Henschel, and Reece Moroney tripled to score Scott Penney, making it 3-0.
Errors continued to plague the Chargers in the fourth inning, allowing two additional runs. Scott Penney's single scored Ryan King and TJ Gormley, extending Rhode Island's advantage to 5-0.
In the sixth inning, Rhode Island broke the game open with a four-run homer by Ryan Henschel, scoring Jack Hopko, King, and Gormley. A single by Ryan Thompson added another run, increasing the lead to 10-0.
The Rams scored their final run in the seventh inning on a single by Danny Leikus that brought home Brian Connolly, resulting in the 11-0 final score.
Carson Morgan (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) delivered a solid performance, pitching one inning with one hit and one strikeout without allowing any runs.
James Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) gave up two runs on two hits and a walk over one inning. Jace Vanvalkenburg surrendered two earned runs and issued two walks in his one inning, throwing a season-high 39 pitches.
Jesse Kostulious (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) started the game, pitching two innings with one run on one hit and two strikeouts.
Offensively,
Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) provided a highlight with a double in three plate appearances.
Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) added a hit in his three at-bats.
