WEST HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven fell to Le Moyne 13-1 on Saturday at home, as Le Moyne capitalized on 16 walks and five hit batters to secure the victory.
New Haven (1-9, 1-1) managed one run on eight hits, while Le Moyne (3-11, 3-2) scored 13 runs on eight hits, aided by New Haven's three errors.
Le Moyne opened the scoring in the second inning when Robert Wegrzyn singled down the left field line, bringing in Adam Sullivan. Mike Whelehan's subsequent singles and a double extended Le Moyne's lead to 5-0. New Haven's
Jake Russo (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) doubled in the bottom half but couldn't spark a rally. Russo recorded a season-high three hits, yet Le Moyne led 5-0 after two innings.
In the fifth, Le Moyne added two more runs. Cooper Romich reached on an error, allowing Sullivan to score, while Paulie Goodness's single brought in Romich for an unearned run, pushing the lead to 7-0.
Le Moyne tacked on another run in the sixth when Derek Diaz walked with the bases loaded, scoring Jack Cannon, making it 8-0.
New Haven got on the board in the seventh inning.
Clark Beattie (Glastonbury, Conn./Xavier) pinch-hit and singled, eventually scoring on a groundout by
Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington). This marked Beattie's first run of the season. Manson, who recorded two or more hits in two consecutive games, helped cut the deficit. Le Moyne also added a run in their half, maintaining a 9-1 lead through seven innings.
In the ninth, Le Moyne scored three more runs through a hit by pitch and a walk with the bases loaded, along with a fielder's choice. The Chargers were retired in order in the bottom of the inning, sealing Le Moyne's 13-1 victory.
Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) started for the Blue & Gold, pitching three innings while allowing four hits and five runs, with three earned. He issued four walks and struck out four batters on 86 pitches, achieving a strike-to-pitch ratio of 53.5 percent.
James Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) relieved, throwing a season-high 74 pitches over 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and three runs with only one earned, walking six and striking out two. Kaleb Martinek contributed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits but issuing two walks and striking out one.
Blake Beattie (Glastonbury, Conn./Xavier) and
Robert Synodi (Hebron, C.T./RHAM) closed the game, with Synodi striking out two batters in the ninth inning despite allowing three earned runs.
Russo led the Chargers with three hits, including a double, and finished with an OPS of 1.750. Manson added two hits and drove in one run, posting an OPS of 1.000.
Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) reached base twice, recording one hit and drawing one walk.
Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) contributed by drawing two walks in his plate appearances, marking a season-high for him.
