WEST HAVEN, Conn. — The New Haven baseball team (1-10, 1-2) dropped a close 6-5 decision to Le Moyne (4-11, 4-2) on Sunday at home. Despite amassing 10 hits and drawing seven walks, the Chargers were unable to counteract Le Moyne's decisive five-run fifth inning.
New Haven established an early lead in the third inning when
Aedan Forde (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) crossed home on a sacrifice fly by
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington).
Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) then stole home, extending the Blue & Gold's lead to 2-0 by the end of the third. Ungania showcased his offensive strength, registering a season-high three hits.
The Chargers increased their lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning as Michael Christian scored on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne responded with a five-run surge in the fifth inning, pushing New Haven into a 5-3 deficit.
Max Hilsenroth (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) pitched a season-high 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and throwing 86 pitches, though he ultimately allowed five earned runs on three hits.
Le Moyne added another run in the sixth, making it 6-3. New Haven closed the gap in the seventh when
Jake Russo's (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) RBI double brought home
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington), adjusting the score to 6-4. Russo continued his consistent performance, achieving three or more hits for the second straight game.
In the eighth,
Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington) singled to drive in Michael Christian, bringing New Haven within one run at 6-5. Manson also drew a season-high two walks.
Despite a ninth-inning double from Russo, the Chargers could not score again, concluding the contest with Le Moyne securing the 6-5 victory.
Max Hilsenroth (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) allowed five earned runs, walked five, and struck out six over 4 2/3 innings.
Jesse Kostulious (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) faced three batters without recording an out, issuing three walks and a wild pitch.
Justin Eckrote (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run and two walks.
Cole Gibson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) closed the game effectively, pitching a season-high three scoreless innings, striking out one and allowing no hits.
Ungania's performance included three hits and two stolen bases, underscoring his offensive contributions. Russo tallied three hits, including two doubles, and drove in one run. Christian scored twice and contributed four assists, highlighting his dual-threat capabilities. Forde added two walks and a hit, leading the team with five assists.
