Hofstra Uses Late Surge to Defeat New Haven in Midweek Battle

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The New Haven baseball team fell to Hofstra University 15-5 on Tuesday at University Field. New Haven (1-11) managed five hits and five runs, while Hofstra (4-10) recorded 13 hits and 15 runs, capitalizing on an eight-run eighth inning to secure the victory.

New Haven started strong in the first inning. Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington) scored on an infield single by Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch), marking McGugan's first RBI of the season. Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) added to the score by crossing the plate on a bases-loaded walk by Ej Ettinger. Hofstra responded with a run, ending the inning at 2-1 in favor of the Chargers.

In the fifth inning, the Blue & Gold extended their lead when Callahan scored on a wild pitch, making it 3-2. However, Hofstra took the lead in the sixth inning with three runs, highlighted by Michael Brown's RBI double, shifting the score to 5-3 in favor of Hofstra.

Hofstra increased their advantage to 7-3 by adding two more runs in the seventh inning. In the eighth, New Haven narrowed the gap as Chase McNally's (Methacton, Pa./Methacton) two-run single brought home Ettinger and Mike Christian (Audubon, Pa./Methacton), giving McNally a season-high total of two RBIs. However, Hofstra's offense erupted for eight runs, capped by Tyler Cox's three-run triple, closing the inning with Hofstra leading 15-5.

The game concluded with a final score of 15-5 in favor of Hofstra.

On the mound, James Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) pitched 1 inning, allowing 1 hit with 1 walk and striking out 1. Mason Glickman (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) faced a tough outing, conceding 8 earned runs on 4 hits over 2/3 inning, also allowing 2 hit batters and issuing 1 walk. Blake Beattie (Glastonbury, Conn./Xavier) made a brief appearance, facing just one batter without recording an out. Carson Morgan (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 earned runs while walking 1 and striking out 1. Justin Eckrote (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) allowed 3 earned runs on 3 hits over 2/3 inning, walking 2 with 1 wild pitch and a balk. Jesse Kostulias started, pitching 1 inning and allowing 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 1. Caleb Martinek (Enfield, Conn./The MacDuffie School) provided solid relief with 1 scoreless inning, allowing no hits but hitting 1 batter and walking another. Jace VanValkenburg completed a season-high 2 innings, surrendering 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 1 and walking 1, and threw a season-high 36 pitches.

Callahan scored two runs and added a hit in four plate appearances, showcasing his ability to reach base effectively. McGugan recorded an RBI and tallied a hit while also drawing a walk, contributing to the team's offensive effort. McNally collected two RBIs with his single, providing crucial runs in the lineup. Manson added a hit and a run scored, along with a sacrifice hit, demonstrating versatility at the plate.
