STORRS, Conn. — New Haven baseball (0-7) suffered a 9-4 defeat against the University of Connecticut (5-7) on Wednesday. Playing on the road, the Chargers fell behind early but managed a late surge with four runs in the ninth inning. Despite a season-high 12 hits, New Haven could not overcome UConn's decisive five-run eighth inning, highlighted by two home runs and three triples.
In the second inning, UConn took a 1-0 lead when Cam Righi's RBI single brought in Gabriel Tirado. By the end of the third inning, UConn extended their lead to 3-0 courtesy of a two-run homer by Jackson Marshall, which scored Chris Polemeni.
The seventh inning saw UConn's lead grow to 4-0 after Evan Menzel tripled and scored on Polemeni's RBI single. UConn then widened the gap in the eighth with a five-run burst, featuring an inside-the-park home run by Menzel, a sacrifice fly by Maddix Dalena, and an RBI double by Righi, making it 9-0.
In the ninth inning, the Blue & Gold mounted a late rally.
Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and
Jaylin Manson (Newington, Conn./Newington), each with a season-high two hits, contributed singles alongside
Aedan Forde (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who drove in Frazzetta.
Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) notched his first RBI of the season with a single, followed by
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) and
Casey Cerruto (Torrington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) with RBI singles, closing the game at 9-4.
