NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — New Haven baseball (9-27, 8-14 NEC) suffered a tough loss against Central Connecticut State University (14-21, 11-14 NEC) in a 10-6 contest on Sunday, following a dramatic series that began with a narrow 7-6 victory on Saturday and a successful 6-2 win on Friday.
In Friday's matchup, New Haven took an early lead in the first inning, with
Nick Ungania (Mineola, N.Y./Chaminade) scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Joseph Frazzetta (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) after reaching third on
Jake Russo's (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) ground-rule double. However, Central Connecticut State responded in the second with two unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead. The Chargers tied the game in the fourth inning when
EJ Ettinger (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored on a groundout by Ungania. They regained the lead in the fifth as
Shaun Callahan (Newington, Conn./Newington) scored on a single by Frazzetta, making it 3-2. New Haven extended their lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning with runs from Ungania and Russo, eventually adding an unearned run in the seventh for a 6-2 final score.
On Saturday, New Haven's offense exploded in the third inning, scoring five runs to take control of the game.
Cam McGugan (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) started with a double, and after a series of hits and an error, the Chargers ended the inning with a 5-1 advantage. Central Connecticut State fought back, narrowing the gap to 7-6 in the eighth with two runs but could not complete the comeback.
Vincent Fusco (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay East Fishkill) closed the game, securing the victory for New Haven.
Sunday's game saw New Haven score first, with Ungania walking, stealing second, and scoring on Cerruto's single. Central Connecticut State countered with two runs in the second, taking a 2-1 lead. The Chargers tied the game at 2-2 in the third with a triple from Callahan, but Central Connecticut regained the lead with two runs in the fourth. New Haven tied it again in the fourth but fell behind again when Central Connecticut State scored in the fifth and extended their lead to 9-5 after six innings. Despite a late run from the Chargers, they could not overcome the deficit.
Max Hilsenroth (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) delivered a stellar performance on Friday, pitching a complete game while striking out 10 batters and allowing no earned runs. Ungania contributed two runs and one RBI, while Russo led the team with three hits, including a double. Frazzetta added two hits and drove in two runs.
James Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) pitched six innings on Saturday, allowing four runs and earning his first win of the season. Herzman highlighted the offensive effort with three hits, driving in two runs, and McGugan scored twice. Fusco secured the save with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Up next, New Haven will host the University of Rhode Island at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Frank Vieira Field in West Haven, Connecticut.
