(10-17-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer gave its four seniors a game to remember in the Class of 2010’s final game at Kayo Field on Saturday afternoon. Tied 2-2 in the second overtime period and just under than two minutes left till the game would end in a draw, Alexa DellaRocco found the foot of Lucy Francisco in the front of the net for the game winner. The Chargers improve to 8-6-3 overall, but more importantly improve to 5-6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference – keeping their hopes at their second NE-10 tournament berth very much alive. Saint Anselm, who was ranked eighth in the NE-10 prior to the game, slips to 7-7-1 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
The Chargers were first to get on the board with an early first half goal. Francisco netted her first goal of the afternoon off a shallow cross from Emily Buckley-Matura just a 1:30 into the game.
New Haven was able to control the pace of the ball for much of the half, until Teresa Vercollone took advantage of a rebound inside the box to bring the game to an even 1-1 score.
UNH took its second lead of the game off a shot from DellaRocco. Francisco found DellaRocco at the top of the box open, DellaRocco took a touch and then buried deep into the top left corner of the net.
The game went into halftime with the Chargers ahead 2-1 and holding an 8-3 shot advantage.
In the second half, New Haven continued to control the game, but the Hawks managed to respond for the second time with a goal in the 60th minute. Heidi Reece sneaked one by the Charger defense to tie the game at 2-2. Ashley Lafond was awarded the assist.
With the game tied, the Chargers had numerous opportunities on net in the final minutes, but the Hawk defense managed to keep negate any UNH attempt, forcing overtime.
Francisco broke the deadlock in the 108th minute with a shot in front of the goal off a cross-pass from DellaRocco. Francisco paced the New Haven offense with two goals and an assist, while DellaRocco added a goal and an assist.
The Charger defense allowed just five shots the entire afternoon and not a single opportunity in overtime. Goalkeeper Kim Taylor recorded the win and added two saves, while St. Anselm’s Jacqueline Cooney nabbed seven saves.
The Chargers will wrap-up the regular season with two road games. A midweek matchup at Adelphi on Tuesday, followed by a Saturday game at Saint Michael’s rounds out the 2009 regular season for UNH.
