(10-20-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 1-0 Tuesday afternoon to Nyack College in double overtime at Kayo Field. Despite rattling off 20 shots, the Chargers fall to 1-14 this season, while the Warriors improve to 7-8-1.
The only score in Tuesday's game came in the 107th minute when UNH goalkeeper Jonathan Creem made a save on a Nyack direct kick from just outside of the 18-yard box. The ball bounced back into play and the Warriors connected for the game-winner.
The Chargers, however, tallied numerous scoring opportunities in the game, including both overtime periods. The Nyack goalkeeper tallied nine saves in the game, including two in the second overtime period and one in the first overtime period. For the Chargers, Creem matched his season-high of 10 saves, including six in the second half and one in the second overtime.
The Charger offense was led by Nick Pezzente, who moved to a forward position from his tradition defensive position. Pezzente tallied six shots and two shots on goal, while freshman Austin Coleman also registered two shots on goal. Steven Gennuso attempted five total shots and one shot on goal, while freshman Roberto Novoa tallied two shots and one shot on goal.
The Chargers led 20-16 in shots, but trailed 11-9 in shots on goal. UNH attempted 13 corner kicks, while holding Nyack to seven corner attempts. UNH was called for 18 fouls, while the Warriors were called for just six.
New Haven returns to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Molloy College. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
