Box Score

(11-15-09) ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 67-70 Sunday afternoon to Molloy College. It was the season opener for the Chargers who fall to 0-1, while the Lions improve to 1-0.

New Haven came out ready to play in their season opener, scoring nine of the first 12 points to take a 9-3 lead at the 15:18 mark. Over the ensuing two and a half minutes, the Lions cut into the Chargers' lead and took a 10-9 lead at the 12:41 mark. The Lions went on to open a six-point lead at 16-10.

Back-to-back layups by junior James Carr helped the lead the Chargers to tying the score at 18-18 with 6:48 left in the opening half. Molloy then went on a 7-0 run to take a 25-18 lead. After cutting the lead to five, UNH missed three shots to help keep the Lions ahead 27-22 at halftime.

The Chargers went on a 4-0 run to open the second half, but found themselves down by 14 nearly 10 minutes later. A three-pointer at the 11:20 mark gave Molloy a 47-33 lead. UNH gradually chipped away at the Lions lead, including a three-pointer by senior Cassius Chaney with 1:14 remaining in regulation.

New Haven would begin to foul the Lions and it paid off. With 38-seconds left, Molloy made two free throws to take a 64-58 lead. Chaney then went down the court and hit another three-pointer to bring UNH within three at 61-64. After a UNH foul and two made free throws, UNH freshman C.J. Ruskay then connected from downtown to bring UNH within two with 18-seconds remaining.

Molloy connected on another two free throws to take a four-point lead with 14 seconds remaining. Chaney once again went down the court and hit a three-pointer to give the Chargers a one-point deficit with nine seconds left. The Chargers eventually fell in the battle, as the Lions connected on their next two free throws and Chaney's desperation three with two seconds remaining fell short.

Chaney led the team with 22 points on 7-of-22 shooting. The senior added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Fellow senior Kelvin Jackson was second on the team with 14 points and ten rebounds, while freshman Ruskay finished with nine points.

The Chargers shot 37.1 percent from the floor, while the Lions shot 39.6 percent in the game. UNH led the rebound battle with a 40-37 advantage, while also forcing 23 turnovers.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, November 18 when they travel to American International College. Game time in Springfield, Mass. is set for 7:30 p.m.
