Assumption Too Much for Chargers in Home Opener

(11-24-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 90-77 to Assumption College Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss the Chargers fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10.

An 8-0 run to close the first half, including back-to-back three-pointers by Mike Stys, helped the Chargers cut a 13-point Greyhound lead to 36-31 at the break. UNH had also cut into the Assumption lead, getting the score as close as 22-19 at the 7:38 mark, but the Chargers struggled to take the lead.

Four minutes and 30-seconds into the second half, UNH had their first lead of the second half. The Chargers went on an 8-0 run, including two three-pointers to take the lead. The Greyhounds regrouped and eventually would take the lead back at the 10:15 mark of the second half. Assumption scored 11 unanswered points to take a 65-55 lead with 7:07 remaining. New Haven cut the lead to five with 4:47 remaining, but the Greyhounds would hold on and take the 90-77 victory.

Leading the Chargers with 27 points was Cassius Chaney. He completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, while adding three assists and one steal as well. Kelvin Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench for UNH, while Darryl Greene scored 13 points and handed out six assists.

The Chargers shot 43.1 percent from the floor, but the Greyhounds hit a remarkable 51.9 percent of their shots, including 50 percent from beyond the arc.
