(11-24-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated the Assumption College Greyhounds 65-58 in overtime Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds fall to 3-1 and 1-1 in the NE-10.
The Chargers ran off 13 unanswered points to take a 13-2 advantage early in the opening half. Freshman Jill Baranger was the Chargers' major offensive weapon with nine points in the run. New Haven continued to roll and led 35-24 at the half, scoring 20 points as the result of 18 turnovers by the Greyhounds.
Down nine, 40-31, in the second half the Greyhounds rallied to move ahead 47-46 of the Chargers. Molly Griffiths drilled a jumper to give the Hounds a one-point lead with 8:03 left.
New Haven however came back to go ahead 55-51 as Dominique Stellmacher converted a conventional three-point play with 1:41 left. Assumption then hit on a lay up and a three-pointer to give Assumption the advantage, 56-55, with 1:06 left. New Haven tied the game as senior forward Alysia Saunders made one of two free throws with 36 seconds left.
Griffiths started the overtime making a pair of free throws to take a two point lead (58-56) however the Chargers would run the last nine points to win by seven. Junior guards Stellmacher and Nicole Pollard each played well in support roles for the Chargers who outscored the Greyhounds 8-2 in the overtime period.
Baranger finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds in her second double-double of the season. She also added two blocks in nearly 40 minutes. Stellmacher added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in her first start of the season, while Pollard grabbed 12 points, four boards, three steals and two assists.
As a team, UNH shot 30.3 percent from the floor, while the Greyhounds out-shot UNH with 33.3 percent from the floor. Assumption also held a 37.5 percent to 26.3 percentage advantage in three-point shooting.
