(11-29-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team, led by a career-high 22-point performance from junior Dominique Stellmacher, defeated the visiting Le Moyne College Dolphins 73-38 at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Dolphins fall to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10.
Besides the initial bucket to start the game by the Dolphins, the Chargers never relinquished the lead en route to their third NE-10 win of the season. After the first basket, UNH went on a nine point run, to go ahead 9-2 early in the half. Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty hit New Haven's first of 11 three-pointers to put the Chargers on the board and spark the nine-point run.
The Chargers dominated the tempo of the half, increasing their lead as the minutes waned down. Stellmacher drained her second bucket from behind the arc and the final basket of the half, to give UNH their biggest lead of the half at 40-16.
The Dolphins had no answer for the Chargers' pressure on both sides of the court, as UNH continued to control the game in the second half. New Haven held its biggest lead of the game with 4:43 on the clock when Nicole Pollard knocked down a three to go ahead 69-29.
The Chargers finished the afternoon shooting a season-high 52.4 percent from behind the arc and a season-high 46 percent from the floor. Stellmacher led the team with 22 points and eight rebounds. Alysia Saunders also pulled down eight rebounds, along with her four points. Pollard and Ithier-Vicenty added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Chargers are back in action on Wednesday, December 2 when they head to the College of the Saint Rose for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
