Chargers Lead with Seconds Left, But Fall at the Hands of No. 20 Le Moyne

(11-29-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team led 79-78 with 17 seconds remaining in Sunday's game against nationally ranked no. 20 Le Moyne College, but the Dolphins connected on two free throws with eight seconds left to earn the 80-79 victory. With the loss the Chargers fall to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the NE-10, while the Dolphins improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 i nthe NE-10.

The Dolphins and Chargers played a very closely contested opening half. Neither team led by more than seven points, while the score was tied seven times. With six seconds left, Le Moyne's Laurence Ekperigin hit a jumper to take a one-point lead. The Dolphins would hold on to that one-point lead until halftime.

UNH shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half, but Le Moyne connected on an amazing 55.2 percent of its shots. Senior Cassius Chaney led the way for UNH with 11 first-half points, while Ekperigin and Damani Corbin each added 11 for the Dolphins.

The second half was a roller coaster. The Dolphins opened by going on a 15-7 run to take a 12-point lead with 14:38 remaining. Le Moyne also held a double digit lead at the 10:09 mark before the Chargers starting gaining ground. Darryl Greene connected from three-point range with 9:44 on the clock and sparked an 18-9 UNH run which tied the game at 72-72 with 2:52 left in regulation. Each team then made a pair of free throws, followed by another two by Le Moyne to take a 76-74 lead with 1:33 remaining. The teams then exchanged layups to give the Dolphins a 78-76 lead with 35 seconds left. New Haven's junior forward Robert Jamerson then connected on a non-traditional three-point play to give UNH their first lead of the second half with 17-second remaining. The Dolphins then answered by scoring on a pair of free throws to take an 80-79 lead. The Chargers' ensuing three-point attempt rattled off the rim and the no. 20 Dolphins escaped Charger Gymnasium with the win.

Both teams shot incredible throughout the second half. UNH connected on 56.7 percent of its second-half shots, while the Dolphins put home 68.2 percent.

Four Chargers scored in double figures in the game. Chaney scored a team-high 20 points, while grabbing seven boards, three assists and three steals. Jamerson added 18 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Greene added 13 points and Kelvin Jackson scored 10 points.

The Chargers shot a season-high 52.7 percent from the floor and 73.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Dolphins shot 60.8 percent on the game, and went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, December 2 when they travel to the College of St. Rose. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
