Volleyball Clinches Top Seed and At Least A Share of NE-10 Regular Season Title

Box Score

(11-06-09) MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the St. Anselm College Hawks in three sets Friday night (25-21, 25-16, 25-21) on their way to clinching the no. 1 seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament. With the win the Chargers also clinch at least a share of the NE-10 regular season championship.

The Chargers, who improved to 14-0 in the NE-10 and 23-4 overall, have one match remaining in the regular season, tomorrow against St. Michael's College, in order to complete their second-straight sweep of the NE-10 regular season. Since joining the conference prior to the 2008 season, the Chargers have yet to drop a match to a conference opponent (18-0).

The Chargers took control of the match immediately and secured a 25-21 victory in the opening set. UNH trailed 17-15 before going on a 10-4 scoring spree to take the opening set. Tymika Duncan put down a kill after a set from Tia Inong on set-point to give a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Chargers never trailed in the second set and at one point held an 11-4 lead. They took that lead and turned it into a 20-11 lead before sealing the set at 25-16 off a kill from Inong.

Despite prevailing in the final set, UNH trailed 12-6 early in the third set. However, three consecutive aces by Heather Ladao and three consecutive St. Anselm hitting errors put UNH right back in the set with a 15-12 lead. The team then went mostly point-for-point before Duncan ended the match with a kill for straight set victory.

Duncan and Elizabeth Akinbiyi led the Chargers with a total of 13 kills. Akinbiyi added a .417 hitting percentage and nine total blocks. Inong handed out 18 assists, while Ladao led the back row with 11 digs.

The Chargers conclude the 2009 regular season tomorrow with a chance to earn their second-straight NE-10 regular season championship outright tomorrow, November 7 when they take on St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
