(12-02-09) ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated the College of St. Rose 55-45 Wednesday night at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers stay perfect in the Northeast-10 Conference at 4-0, while improving to 5-1 overall. The Golden Knights fall to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the NE-10.
The Chargers would shoot 26.7 percent from the floor in the opening half and find themselves behind 24-19 at halftime. Only three Chargers scored in the first half, Jill Baranger netted eight points, Helin Marte scored six points and Olivia DeMarco scored five points.
New Haven turned it around in the second half. They opened the second half with back-to-back three-pointers and Baranger connected on a layup to give UNH the immediate second-half lead. Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty made the second of two free throws with 13:43 remaining in the second half to push the Chargers up by six, 34-28.
St. Rose would cut the UNH lead to one, with 8:41 left in the half, but the Chargers prevailed by connecting from the charity stripe down the stretch.
Marte finished with a team-high 15 points, while Baranger added 12 total points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Nicole Pollard added six points on 6-for-6 from the foul line, including four in the final minute.
The Chargers attempted 24 second-half free throws, while the Golden Knights attempted just seven.
The UNH defense held St. Rose to 28.3 percent shooting in the game. They only allowed two Golden Knight three pointers throughout the game.
