(12-08-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team rebounded from a six-point halftime deficit against Adelphi University to earn their sixth victory over the season, 73-69, at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers fall to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the NE-10.
After pulling out to a quick 4-0 lead, the Chargers found themselves behind 12-8 just minutes later. In the closing five minutes of the first half, the lead changed numerous times, but Adelphi held a six-point lead, 44-38, at the break.
The Panthers would push their lead to as many as nine, 60-51, at the 12:44 mark of the second half. A layup by Jill Baranger with 10:23 left brought UNH within four at 62-58. Adelphi went on a 6-3 run over the next four minutes to take a 69-61 lead with 5:10 remaining. The Charger defense then buckled down, holding the Panthers scoreless through the final minutes. The Chargers scored 12 unanswered points to close the game and seal their sixth victory of the season.
Junior Dominique Stellmacher carried the Chargers with a career-high 31 points on 13-of-22 shooting. She scored 21 of the Chargers 38 first-half points, while also recording six rebounds, four steals and one assist. Baranger was the only other Charger in double figures with 13 points, while grabbing five rebounds. Alysia Saunders slated a team-high 12 rebounds, while adding eight points and Helin Marte added 10 assists and seven rebounds.
The Chargers shot 41.4 percent from the floor, while the Panthers held an edge in that category with 42.4 percent shooting. Adelphi also held a 47.1 percent-26.7 percent advantage in three-point shooting and a 42-40 advantage in rebounds.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday, December 20 when they travel to Lynn University (Fla.). Game time in Boca Raton, Fla. is set for 2 p.m. UNH will take on Nova Southeastern (Fla.) in another non-conference game in Florida on Tuesday, December 22.
