Chargers Take Overtime, Defeat Franklin Pierce 72-71

(01-12-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated Franklin Pierce University 72-71 in overtime Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the win, UNH improves to 2-12 overall and 2-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Ravens fall to 6-8 overall and 2-8 in the NE-10.

The Chargers opened Tuesday night with a 9-4 run to take the lead early. New Haven maintained the lead for most of the remainder of the first half. A three-pointer from Robert Jamerson at the 6:10 mark gave the Chargers a 27-19 lead. The Ravens answered, going on an 18-2 run to close the half and take an eight-point lead, 37-29, into halftime.

Franklin Pierce improved their lead to as many as 12, before UNH starting chipping away at the lead. With 10:25 left in the half Jeremy Williams connected on a jumper to bring UNH within three, 54-51. Minutes later, Kelvin Jackson hit a jumper and made his free throw on his ensuing three-point play with 3:01 left to cut the Franklin Pierce lead to two, 67-65. After forcing the turnover and grabbing a steal with just over a minute left, Kingsley Aguh hit a layup on a fast break to tie the game at 67-67. Both teams missed jumpers to take the game, which forced overtime.

On the Chargers first possession, Williams hit a three-pointer to give the Chargers a three point lead, 70-67. A Ravens' free throw cut the lead to two with 2:20 left in the overtime period. After two missed three-pointer, Franklin Pierce connected from long range to take a one-point lead with 38 seconds left. Jackson then put an exclamation mark on the Chargers second win of the season with a dunk with 10 seconds left to put the Chargers ahead. The Raven ensuing possession, which resulted in a foul, came up short and the Chargers earned their first win at Charger Gymnasium this season.

Chaney led UNH with 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Jackson added 17 points and seven boards. The Charger shot 46 percent from the floor and 40.9 percent from downtown, while holding the Ravens to 46.9 percent from the floor and 29.6 percent from three-point range.
