(01-12-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 52-65 Tuesday night to nationally ranked No. 1 Franklin Pierce University at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss the Chargers fall to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Ravens improve to 14-0 overall and 10-0 in the NE-10.
The Chargers would rush out and take an early lead on Tuesday. At the 12:57 mark of the first half Helin Marte put in a layup to put New Haven up by seven points, 11-4. A 7-0 run by the Ravens quickly brought the score to 11-11. Marte added two at the 9:55 mark to give the Chargers the lead. Over the next five minute neither team made a basket, until the Ravens connected on a pair of free throws to even the score at 13-13 with 4:43 left in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets for most of the remaining minutes of the half, and Franklin Pierce held a slight 21-20 lead at halftime.
Halftime adjustments proved to be beneficial for the Ravens, as they jumped out to a 13-point lead 12 minutes into the second half. An Olivia DeMarco jumper at the 5:46 mark cut the Ravens' lead to 1, 53-43, but Franklin Pierce answered with a 7-0 run to take a 60-43 lead at the 4:20 mark. With a couple of three pointers and baskets the Chargers once again cut the lead to 10, but the Ravens prevailed with a 65-52 victory.
The Chargers for 29.7 percent from the floor and held a 43-42 rebounding advantage. Franklin Piece, however, caused 23 UNH turnovers, while attempting 28 free throws.
Leading the way for New Haven was Dominique Stellmacher with 18 points and seven rebounds. DeMarco grabbed 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Marte scored 12 points and Jill Baranger also grabbed 11 rebounds.
