Women's Basketball Falls to Stonehill

(01-16-10) EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 72-83 Saturday afternoon at Stonehill College. With the loss the Chargers fall to 7-9 overall and 5-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Skyhawks improve to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the NE-10.

After the Skyhawks scored the first points of Saturday's game, New Haven went on to open a first-half lead. The Chargers largest lead of the half, at the end of an 8-2 run, came off a Helin Marte layup with 10:33 left in the half. UNH led for the next five minutes, but the Skyhawks closed the gap and eventually held a six point, 43-37, lead at the half.

Stonehill opened the second half with a 12-5 run and took a 13-point lead at the 15:24 mark. A 7-2 run the New Haven cut the Skyhawks' lead to seven points with 13:21 on the clock. On four other occasions in the half the Chargers cut the lead to single digits, but down the stretch Stonehill made enough free throws to take the 11-point win.

The Chargers struggled shooting the ball, connecting on 37.3 percent of their shots from the floor. UNH went 0-for-7 from downtown in the second half and 5-for-19 in the game.

Marte lead the team with 14 points, four assist, three steals and three rebounds. Jill Barager added 13 points and seven boards, while Nicole Pollard added 11 points. 

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, January 20 when they travel to St. Michael's College. Game time in Vermont is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
