(01-02-10) NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 60-63 Saturday afternoon at Southern Connecticut State University. The game was the first of 2010 for the Chargers who fall to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Chargers opened up the first half 10-4 on a layup by junior Dominique Stellmacher. The Chargers held the lead for most of the half, but the Owls fought their way back and took the lead at the 3:41 mark. SCSU continued to push their lead up to six on a layup by junior Shelley Pierson. New Haven cut the Owl’s lead to just one on a three pointer from Nicole Pollard, going into halftime.
For the first half, the Chargers were led by Pollard with seven points. The Chargers shot 35.3% from the floor, while the Owl’s shot 26.5%.
In the second half, both teams traded baskets with the score favoring the Owls. New Haven tied the game at the 13:00 minute mark on a free throw from Pollard. The Owl’s pushed their way back and took their largest lead of the game at the 9:24 mark, 50-41. At the 8:00 mark, UNH cut the lead to just two after a 7-0 run. SCSU remained in the lead going into the final minutes of the game. After a three pointer by UNH’s Olivia DeMarco and layup by Pollard, the Chargers came within one. SCSU junior, Logan Lentz, hit two free throw shots with one second remaining. UNH attempted to get a shot off, but time expired.
Pollard led New Haven for the game with 13 points, four assists, and four steals. Stellmacher and DeMarco each tallied nine points. The Chargers shot 36.8% from the floor for the game, while the Owl’s shot 38.7%.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, January 6 when they host Bentley College. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
