(01-23-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated Saint Anselm College 62-46 Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. With the win, the Chargers snap an eight-game losing streak and improve to 8-10 overall, 6-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks fall to 7-11 overall and 4-9 in the NE-10.
The Chargers opened up the game on a three pointer from freshman
Olivia DeMarco. Both teams were evenly matched for the first eight minutes of the game. The Chargers tied the game 10-10 on a layup from senior
Helin Marte. At the 8:55 mark, DeMarco hit another three to put New Haven up by eight, their largest lead of the half. The Chargers then went on a 6-0 run to close the first half.
DeMarco lead UNH with eight first half points, while
Marte added seven points. New Haven shot 42.1% (8-19) from the floor, whereas Saint Anselm shot just 26.1% (6-23).
The Chargers opened the second half strong as the pushed their lead to 12 at the 14:51 mark on a layup from junior
Nicole Pollard. The Hawks continued to attack the Chargers and cut the lead to eight on a pair of free throws from Epiphany Smith. However, back-to-back buckets from
Dominique Stellmacher pushed the lead back to 11, 42-31, at the 11:39 mark. Saint Anselm hit six-free throws around the four minute mark, and found themselves within five, 49-44. Stellmacher answered again for the Chargers hit two layups bringing the Chargers back up by nine. UNH handled the defensive pressure from the Hawks in the final 1:33 of the game, hitting five free throw shots.
Marte closed the game with a jumper giving the Chargers their largest lead of the game, 62-46, and the win to break their eight-game losing streak.
Stellmacher lead UNH for the game with 15 points.
Marte added 13 points, five assists, and three steals. Freshmen forwards
DeMarco and
Jill Baranger had 11 and 10 points respectively. The Chargers shot 42% from the floor for the game, and forced 29 Hawk turnovers.
