(01-26-10) MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 69-80 Tuesday night to Southern New Hampshire University. With the loss the Chargers fall to 2-16 overall and 2-12 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen improve to 12-7 overall and 7-7 in the NE-10.
The Chargers led early in the first half Tuesday. The Penmen answered to a four-point deficit and eventually tied the score at 12-12 six minutes into the game. After a two-minute scoring drought, the Penmen took control and eventually opened their largest lead of the first half, 34-22, with 2:59 left in the period. The UNH layup with 31 seconds left brought it within nine, but SNHU also connected on a layup with five seconds left to push the lead to 11 points, 38-27, at halftime.
The Chargers managed to keep the lead within single figures for the first 5:30 of the second half, but the Penmen gradually pulled away down the stretch. SNHU lead by 19 points with 7:29 left in regulation, its largest lead of the game. With some free throws in the final minutes, the Chargers would get no closer than the final score at 69-80.
Cassius Chaney led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds. Robert Jamerson scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Darryl Greene added 13 points.
UNH shot 47.2 percent from the floor, 52.9 percent from three-point range and 58.8 percent from the foul line, while the Penmen shot 56.0 percent from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent from the charity stripe.
New Haven returns to the court on Saturday, January 30 when they host Merrimack College at Charger Gymnasium.
